Navigating the foster care system as a teenager was a challenging journey, filled with both moments of uncertainty and growth. From the age of 14, until I aged out at 21, I learned firsthand the crucial role that consistency, permanency, and having a trusted confidant play in the lives of foster youth.
Consistency: A Lifeline in Uncertainty
During my time in foster care, consistency became my anchor. With frequent changes in placements and caregivers, consistent routines and expectations provided me with much-needed stability. Even when everything else was in flux, knowing what to expect gave me a sense of security and helped me stay grounded.

The Missing Piece: Permanency
Despite the care I received from foster parents and caseworkers, the lack of permanency weighed heavily on me. The knowledge that my living situation was temporary created a lingering sense of instability. As I neared the age of 18, the looming reality of aging out of the system made this even more pronounced. Permanency isn’t just about a physical home; it’s about having a lasting sense of belonging, a family, and a support system that endures beyond foster care.

The Power of Having Someone to Talk To
Throughout my journey, having someone to talk to was invaluable. Whether it was a supportive foster parent, a caseworker, or a therapist, these trusted individuals provided a safe space for me to express my fears, frustrations, and hopes. Their guidance and support were vital in helping me build the resilience needed to overcome the challenges I faced.

Reflection and Hope
As I reflect on my experiences, I’m grateful for the lessons I’ve learned and the support I’ve received. While the road was not always easy, it has shaped me into who I am today. I hope that my story serves as a reminder of the importance of consistency, permanency, and having someone to talk to for all children in the foster care system. These elements are not just beneficial; they are essential for helping foster youth thrive and transition successfully into adulthood.
